Market Story: Are You Ready To Cut Waste By New Packaging?
food waste

The UK innovative retailer - Tesco, who just re-designed its private label soup with retort pouch in 2012, becomes the first retailer to try the revolutionary packaging for its tomatoes and avocados.

According to Tesco, this is the trial run of this revolutionary packaging. There is a strip that absorbs ethylene, the hormone that causes fruit to ripen and then turn mouldy in the revolutionary packaging. By estimation, 1.6m packs of tomatoes and 350,000 packs of avocados will be saved annuanlly.

"The packaging is a major breakthrough in the fight to combat food waste and could save the fresh produce industry tens of millions of pounds each year.", Tesco ambient salad and avocado technologist Steve Deebie said.

"But it will also mean that customers can keep the fruit and vegetables for longer without feeling pressure to eat them within the purchase days. What's more, no added costs will be shifted to customers for this new packaging."

If the new packaging is success, it will be rolled out by coming Easter.
